The PGA of Australasia rankings has been devised as a method to rank golfers based on their performances in tour events on the PGA Tour of Australasia. This rankings system runs over the past 33 rolling PGA Tour of Australasia events. The is due to the past two seasons having incorporated a total of 33 tour events (at inception in July 2024). This figure will change based on the total events played each season (if 19 events are played in season 2024/25, the past 37 events will be used in calculations as 18 events were played in season 2023/24).

In order to be ranked, a player must be a PGATA member and eligible in the Order of Merit (played a minimum of four tour events in the most recent season).

Rankings Points are maintained at full value for the past season, then reduced at equal decrements for the prior season expressed as a percentage of the total events played in that season.

For example, in season 2022/23 there were 15 tour events played. The most recent event (The National) will have points and its divisor applied at 93.75% of its total value, and the opening event (WA Open) will have points and divisor applied at 6.25% (1/16) of its total value. As events in season 2024/25 are played, percentages will decrease by 6.25% with each event completed until they reach zero and are no longer considered in calculations. Events from season 2023/24 will decrease at a rate of 5.26% (1/19) with each event played as there were a total of 18 tournaments over the season.

Events have been categorised based on their typical Strength of Field:

Rankings Explained

  • Category 1 - PNG Open 2023 (due to very weak SoF)

  • Category 2 - Standard Band 1 Event (WA Open, VIC PGA, QLD PGA, etc)

  • Category 3 - PGATA & WPGA Co-Sanctioned Events

  • Category 4 - Band 2 & 3 Events (VIC & NSW Open)

  • Category 5 - Asian Tour Co-Sanctioned Events (NZ Open)

  • Category 6 - DPWT Co-Sanctioned Events (Aus PGA, Aus Open)

Order of Merit points earned from the previous season’s Top 50 is totalled and averaged for each event and added to the relevant category. This figure is compared to all tour events across the past three seasons (two seasons at inception). A multiplier is then applied to each category based on how the Top 50 has performed in that event type.

Example:

Over season 2022/23 and 2023/24, each player from the previous Top 50 has earned an average of 17.41 Order of Merit points per Tour Event. This accounts for all Band 1/2/3/4 events where a different number of Order of Merit points are awarded.

In Category 2 events (as above), the Top 50 earn an average of 15.52 Order of Merit points per player. Player A wins and earns 190 Order of Merit points. A multiplier of 1.12x (17.41 / 15.52) is applied so Player A has earned 212.80 Rankings Points.

In Category 5 events, the Top 50 earn an average of 33.29 Order of Merit points per player. Player B finishes outright second and earns 428 Order of Merit points. A multiplier of 0.52x (17.41 / 33.29) is applied so Player B has earned 222.56 Rankings Points.

The lower multiplier may seem counterintuitive as Category 5 events have a much higher Strength of Field, however with four times the amount of Order of Merit points awarded there are still approximately 2.15x more Rankings Points earned in these events.

Category and Tour averages are updated after each tour event but the new multiplier is not retroactively applied to prior events.

In order to be a ranked amateur, a player must have completed two tour events in the most recent season.

Order of Merit points are assigned to each amateur based on finishing position with all players in the field being eligible (professionals are assigned OOM points disregarding amateur players), with the relevant multiplier applied as above.
